Why a house call is better medicine for exotics
This isn't a convenience upgrade. For cold-blooded animals, the trip itself changes the patient — and hides the cause.
Transport is a real stressor
A reptile pulled out of its heat gradient and driven across Houston arrives cold, stressed, and showing different signs than it did at home. That makes the exam harder to read.
The habitat is the diagnosis
With exotics, the enclosure is usually part of the problem — basking temps, UVB age, humidity, substrate, water parameters. None of that fits in a carrier.
Some patients can't travel
Pond koi, large aquariums, and reef tanks are genuinely difficult to move safely. Seeing them in their own system is often the only practical option.
What a visit includes
This is an exotic-only practice specializing in reptiles, amphibians, fish, invertebrates, and corals — not dogs and cats.
Diet & environment evaluation
Temperature gradients, humidity, and UVB for terrestrial setups; pH and water chemistry for aquatic ones — checked in place, with specific fixes.
Microscopic substrate evaluation
Substrate and enclosure samples checked under the microscope on site — parasites and problems don't always show up in the animal first.
Portable diagnostics
Sample collection and testing run from the visit with portable equipment, so you're not driving your animal to a second location.
Aquarium & pond health and stocking evaluations
The whole system assessed in place — water chemistry, filtration, and bioload — along with whether the animals you have, or the ones you are planning to add, actually suit the setup you are running.
Pre-introduction inspection & prophylactic treatment
New livestock examined and treated before it goes into an established pond or aquarium. Most wipeouts of a healthy system arrive with a single new animal that looked fine in the bag.
At-home euthanasia
For most species, this is one more thing we can do in the place your animal knows, surrounded by its own habitat rather than a clinic. A conversation first, always — never rushed.

For collections or single animals outside that area, Dr. Lewis will travel farther for an added travel fee — request a quote and we'll tell you honestly what that looks like for your location.
